Walk outside to the condenser. The serial on its plate starts with the year and month the unit was built, so 0606 means June 2006. The model number on the same plate tells you the tonnage and efficiency, which you need when comparing a repair quote to a replacement.

Where to find the label on a Goodman air conditioner

A Goodman air conditioner keeps its rating plate on the outside of the outdoor cabinet, often on the corner panel where the copper lines and power whip connect. You can read it without opening anything. Clear away leaves or shrubs first, and if the sun has faded it, take a photo from an angle. Leave the electrical access cover closed. Everything you need is on the exterior plate. Your indoor coil has its own label, and it may be dated differently.

How to read the code

Goodman AC serials are ten digits: year, month, then a six-digit sequence. The model number decodes like this, using a GSX140361 as the example: G is Goodman, S is split system, X is an air conditioner condenser (Z would be a heat pump), 14 is the SEER rating, and 036 is the nominal capacity in thousands of BTU per hour, here 3 tons. The digit after that, 1, means 208/230 volt single-phase power. Codes 018 or 019 are 1.5 tons, 024 or 025 are 2 tons, and 060 is 5 tons. Date the condenser. The indoor coil may have been built or replaced at a different time.

What age means for a Goodman air conditioner

How long a central air conditioner lasts depends a lot on climate. DOE's analysis gives mean lifetimes of about 24.1 years in the North, 24.9 in hot-dry regions and 18.0 in hot-humid regions. Older industry charts are far more conservative, at 7 to 15 years. Either way, a Goodman in Florida or on the Gulf Coast has less runway than the same unit in Ohio. Age-related failures in condensers tend to be the compressor, the outdoor fan motor, refrigerant leaks in the coils and electrical parts like capacitors and contactors, all of which are jobs for a licensed HVAC technician. Before you approve a big repair, find out what failed and whether refrigerant is involved. If the plate lists R-22, ask exactly how much refrigerant the repair needs and how the contractor will source it before you agree. Check Goodman's warranty lookup. The standard parts term is 10 years with registration completed within 60 days of install. A compressor that fails at year 8 on a registered unit is a very different conversation from one at year 18.
