How old is my Daikin furnace or AC?
Daikin's own warranty certificate uses 2610 as its example, and that reads as October 2026. On a US-sold Daikin gas furnace, split air conditioner, heat pump or air handler, the serial's leading digits are year, then month. A serial of 1602393269 means February 2016.
That makes this an Official format for Daikin's ducted, US-built equipment. Ductless mini-splits and the big VRV systems in commercial buildings are a different story. They come from other plants with other serial codes, so first figure out which kind of Daikin you have.
Where to find the label on a Daikin furnace
On a ducted system, the outdoor unit's rating plate is fixed to its cabinet, and the furnace label is inside the furnace door (the 2017 CPSC furnace recall covered Daikin DM80HE models with this layout). Before you open a furnace door, set the thermostat to off and flip the furnace's service switch, which usually looks like a light switch on or near the unit. Read the label with a flashlight from outside the cabinet. A ductless system is easy to spot: a slim wall-mounted head in the room and a small outdoor box with no ductwork. If that is what you have, the YYMM rule below does not apply.
How to read the code
Daikin unitary serials are ten digits with no letters. Take them in three chunks: two digits for the year, two for the month, six for the production count. 1602 is February 2016. 2107 would be July 2021. Because Daikin-brand ducted equipment only arrived in the US market after the 2012 Goodman purchase, a genuine Daikin unitary serial should begin with 13 or later. A serial that starts 96 or 05 on a Daikin-branded unit is a red flag that you are reading a different product line or the wrong number.
| Layout | What it means | Years used |
|---|---|---|
| YY MM ###### | Year, then month (10 digits) | 2013–2026 |

When the format changed
The format has stayed the same since Daikin-brand ducted products launched in the US, because those products come from the former Goodman factories. Daikin's warranty certificates for furnaces and for air conditioners and heat pumps (2026 editions) both carry the YYMM sentence. The one known wrinkle involves indoor coils. A 2024 CPSC recall notice says some coils built in early 2019 carry 2018 prefixes, so treat a coil's date as approximate. For ductless or VRV units, ask the installing contractor or Daikin directly, since this site does not decode those codes. Daikin's warranty lookup page uses the model number to pull coverage details.
Who makes Daikin
Daikin's ducted US line is made by Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing, formerly Goodman Manufacturing of Houston, Texas, according to the CPSC. That is why Daikin, Goodman and Amana ducted units share one serial format and often share parts. All three are sold through independent HVAC dealers rather than retail stores.
How sure is this?
Official format. Daikin publishes how its serial numbers encode the date. We tested the goodman daikin rules against 17 serials, 6 of them with a date known from a recall notice, a printed label date or the maker. None decoded to a wrong year; codes whose year mark repeats show every possible reading. Always confirm with Daikin's serial lookup before you spend money on the answer.
Quick notes
- Check for ductwork before decoding. No ducts usually means a mini-split, which uses a different serial system.
- A Daikin ducted serial that starts before 13 probably is not a Daikin unitary serial; recheck the plate.
- An 80% Daikin furnace with a serial starting 1609 through 1612 is worth checking against the 2017 CPSC recall notice.
- If you have a Daikin furnace with a Goodman condenser, decode both with the same YYMM rule.
Common questions
Does the YYMM rule work on my Daikin mini-split?
No. It applies to Daikin-brand ducted furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and air handlers built by Daikin Comfort in the US. Ductless and VRV models use different serial formats.
Why do Daikin and Goodman units have the same serial style?
They come from the same manufacturer. The CPSC lists Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing as formerly Goodman Manufacturing.
My Daikin furnace serial begins 1609. Is it part of a recall?
Possibly. A 2017 CPSC recall covered certain 80% furnaces from Goodman, Amana and Daikin with serials beginning 1609 through 1612. Check the model against the CPSC notice or call Daikin.
How long do ducted heat pumps like Daikin's usually last?
DOE's analysis for its efficiency rules puts the average split air-source heat pump at roughly 15 to 16 years, depending on climate region. Use the age you decode here as a starting point.
