How old is my Amana furnace or AC?
Amana puts the build year and month right up front. In 0211847363, the 02 is the year and the 11 is the month, so November 2002. A serial beginning 2204 left the factory in April 2022.
Amana's warranty paperwork states the rule word for word, so this is an Official format. It covers Amana gas furnaces, central air conditioners, heat pumps and the wall-mounted PTAC units in many apartments and hotel rooms. Kitchen Amanas are another story. The refrigerators, ranges and washers belong to a separate business today, and their serials follow other rules.
Where to find the label on a Amana furnace
On an Amana outdoor condenser or heat pump, look for the metal or foil plate on the cabinet itself. For a furnace, the label is inside the front door; switch the unit off at its service switch, then lift the blower door and shine a flashlight along the side walls. On a PTAC, the serial hides behind the snap-on front cover. CPSC recall notices from 2004 and 2014 place it under the operating controls, on the control board plate. Lifting that cover to read a label is fine. Do not reach past it into the unit, and leave any screwed-on panel to a licensed HVAC technician.
How to read the code
Count ten digits, all numeric. Positions one and two give the year (02 is 2002, 97 is 1997), positions three and four give the month from 01 to 12, and the last six are a sequence number. An Amana serial beginning 9704 dates to April 1997. A serial beginning 1306 dates to June 2013, the example Amana's own 2015 warranty uses. If the middle pair is 13 or higher, you have either copied the model number or found an older Amana serial style.

When the format changed
The YYMM serial on Amana heating and cooling gear is the same scheme Goodman uses, and the paper trail is strong. The 2004 CPSC recall of Amana PTACs tied serials beginning 96 through 0303 to units 'manufactured from January 1996 through March 2003', which matches YYMM exactly. Older Amana equipment built before the line joined Goodman can carry letters or a dashed serial such as 98-90558. Sources disagree on how to read those, so this site does not decode them. For one of those units, look for a printed date on the plate, check the original installation invoice, or enter the serial in Amana's warranty lookup.
Who makes Amana
Amana heating and cooling is built by Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing, the company that was Goodman. CPSC recall notices list Amana, Goodman and Daikin furnaces together, and the same YYMM serial reading works for all three brands. Amana equipment is sold through independent HVAC dealers nationwide, and Amana-brand PTACs are common in multifamily buildings.
How sure is this?
Official format. Amana publishes how its serial numbers encode the date. We tested the goodman daikin rules against 17 serials, 6 of them with a date known from a recall notice, a printed label date or the maker. None decoded to a wrong year; codes whose year mark repeats show every possible reading. Always confirm with Amana's serial lookup before you spend money on the answer.
Quick notes
- A dashed or letter-bearing Amana serial is an older pre-Goodman style; use a printed date or install records instead of guessing.
- PTAC owners in a rental can ask the landlord or building manager for install dates before pulling the front cover.
- If two Amana units in the same house show the same YYMM prefix, they were very likely installed together.
- Keep a photo of the plate on your phone. A contractor quoting a repair will ask for the model and serial.
Common questions
Is my Amana air conditioner made by the same company as my Amana fridge?
No. Amana heating and cooling equipment comes from the Goodman side, now Daikin Comfort Technologies. Kitchen and laundry appliances under the Amana name are sold alongside Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag, and they use their own serial codes.
What does an Amana serial starting with 96 mean?
It was built in 1996. The CPSC's 2004 recall of Amana PTACs listed serials beginning 96 as part of units manufactured from January 1996 onward.
Can I use Goodman's serial rule on an Amana unit?
Yes, for the 10-digit numeric serials. Both brands come from the same maker and both warranties state the same YYMM rule.
The plate shows a separate manufacture date. Which one wins?
The printed date. It comes straight from the factory and avoids any reading mistake.
