How much does a water heater expansion tank cost to install?
Water expands when it heats, and in most modern homes that extra volume has nowhere to go. The range above prices a plumber's visit to install a 2 gallon thermal expansion tank on the cold water line of a household water heater. It adds the online list price of common potable-water expansion tanks from the major brands to two hours of billed time: about an hour of hands-on work and an hour for travel and setup. The rate is based on plumber wages in your metro or state, multiplied for contractor overhead. The same figure shows up as an add-on on the water heater cost pages.
Expansion tank installation: typical bill
Part $57 (online list price, middle of 4 listings) plus about 1 hour of hands-on time and a trip and diagnosis hour, billed at roughly $74 an hour (a plumber earning the national median of $31 an hour, times the 2.4 billing multiplier we use). Method.
In older homes, the extra volume simply pushed back into the city main. Today many homes have a check valve, backflow preventer or pressure reducing valve at the meter, which closes the system. A.O. Smith's guide is blunt about it. Most plumbing systems are now closed, and codes require a properly sized and pressurized thermal expansion tank in almost all homes. Without one, pressure spikes every time the heater runs, and the relief valve, fixtures and supply lines take the hit.
What moves the price
New install or replacement
Swapping a failed tank in the same spot is the simplest job. Adding one for the first time means cutting into the cold line, adding a tee and fittings, and supporting the tank so its weight does not hang on the pipe. That takes longer and needs more fittings.
Tank size
Two gallon tanks suit most 40 and 50 gallon heaters at typical pressures. Larger heaters or high street pressure may call for a bigger tank. The plumber should size it from the heater volume and your water pressure.
Pressure check and precharge
The tank's air charge should match your home's water pressure. A plumber measures pressure and sets the charge before installing it. If your pressure is very high, a pressure reducing valve may also be recommended, which is a separate item.
Local plumber rates
The model uses plumber pay at the 25th percentile, median and 75th percentile for your area. Combining this with a water heater replacement saves the separate trip charge.
Repair or replace?
Expansion tanks get replaced, never repaired. They fail when the internal bladder ruptures and the tank fills with water, and from then on it is a heavy steel ornament. Adding or replacing one makes sense on any water heater in a closed system, whatever the heater's age, because it protects the heater, the relief valve and the rest of the plumbing. An old heater due for replacement soon is the exception. Have the tank put in with the new heater and skip a separate visit. A relief valve that drips after each heating cycle, or house pressure that climbs during hot water use, points to a missing or failed expansion tank.

Common questions
Does my home need an expansion tank?
In most places, yes, when your water service has a check valve, backflow preventer or pressure reducing valve. One Utah water agency's page notes that the plumbing code it follows requires a thermal expansion tank on every water heater. Local rules vary, and your plumber or city inspector will know yours.
How do I know my expansion tank has failed?
A failed tank is often heavy and full of water instead of half full of air. Other signs are a relief valve that drips when the heater runs, or a pressure gauge that jumps while hot water is being made. A plumber can check it in a minute.
Where should it be installed?
On the cold water supply to the heater, after the check valve, pressure reducing valve or backflow preventer. Code text quoted by the Grand Water and Sewer Service Agency says the device shall connect to the water heater cold supply pipe.
Do tankless water heaters need an expansion tank?
Requirements vary by local code and manufacturer. Tankless heaters hold little water, so many jurisdictions do not require one, but some do. Ask your plumber what your city enforces.
How long does an expansion tank last?
It varies with water quality and pressure. Many are replaced along with the water heater, which is a sensible time to do it since the plumber is already working on that line.
