How much does it cost to replace a water heater anode rod?

Prices checked October 2026. Wages: BLS, May 2025.

An anode rod costs a fraction of a new tank, and its whole job is to corrode so your tank doesn't. The figure above prices a plumber's visit to pull the old rod from a tank water heater and fit a new one. It is the online list price of manufacturer magnesium and aluminum rods from the major tank brands, plus two hours of billed time: about an hour of hands-on work and an hour for travel and setup. The rate is built from plumber wages in your metro or state, multiplied to cover the company's overhead.

Water heater anode rod replacement: typical bill

Low$140
Typical$200
High$400

Part $48 (online list price, middle of 9 listings) plus about 1 hour of hands-on time and a trip and diagnosis hour, billed at roughly $74 an hour (a plumber earning the national median of $31 an hour, times the 2.4 billing multiplier we use). Method.

Every glass-lined steel tank has at least one anode screwed into its top. The rod is a more reactive metal than the tank, so it gets eaten first and the steel is spared. A.O. Smith's guide says each heater has at least one anode that slowly depletes, and that running without one voids the warranty. Once the rod is used up, the tank starts to corrode. A leak follows. It is only a question of when.

What moves the price

How stuck the old rod is

Anodes are tightened at the factory and then sit for years. Many take real force to break loose. Some need special tools. That is why the hands-on time is closer to an hour than a few minutes.

Headroom above the heater

A full-length rod is nearly as tall as the tank. Under a low ceiling or a shelf, the plumber may use a flexible, segmented rod that bends in as it goes. The type affects the part price and how long the job takes.

Rod material and style

Magnesium, aluminum and combination rods are common, and powered anodes exist too. Manufacturer rods list higher than generic ones. The right type depends on the tank and your water, and the brand's specifications should guide it.

Draining and flushing

The tank is partly drained to change the rod. Many plumbers suggest a full flush on the same visit to clear sediment. That adds time but lets you deal with both at once.

Local plumber rates

The model uses plumber wages at the 25th percentile, median and 75th percentile for your area, with markups that reflect typical contractor overhead. Labor is most of this bill.

Repair or replace?

An anode is preventive maintenance, so it pays best on a younger tank. The manufacturer guidance is to inspect it after the first six months and at least once a year after that. Swap a depleted rod on a tank that is a few years old, before rust sets in, and you can add years to its life. Past ten years the case weakens. A rod that is long gone may mean the tank is already corroding inside, and a plumber can check for rust and dampness around it before you spend money. No rod fixes a tank that already leaks. Plan a replacement instead. DOE's analysis puts average gas tank life at about 14.5 years and electric at about 15.1.

What a complete quote lists

  • Anode part number, material and length (or segmented rod)
  • Condition of the old rod, ideally with a photo
  • Draining and refilling the tank, and any flush performed
  • New thread sealant and a leak check at the anode port
  • Note of any rust, leaks or other problems found
  • Service call fee
  • Labor or flat repair price
  • Warranty on the part and labor

Common questions

How often should the anode rod be replaced?

There is no fixed schedule because it depends on water chemistry and use. A.O. Smith says to inspect it after the first six months of operation and at least annually after that, then replace it when it is depleted.

Does a new anode rod make an old water heater last longer?

Only if the tank is still sound. Once the steel is corroding, a new anode slows further damage at best. The payoff is in the first several years.

Will replacing the anode void my warranty?

Installing the correct replacement keeps the tank protected. Running the heater without an anode voids the warranty, according to A.O. Smith. Use the type the manufacturer specifies for your model.

Do tankless or heat pump water heaters have anode rods?

Heat pump water heaters have a tank, and A.O. Smith's hybrid manual treats the anode as a consumable to inspect at least yearly. Most tankless units have no storage tank and no anode.

Can I do it myself?

This page does not give steps. On a gas heater the work is next to the gas connection and vent, and stuck rods can damage fittings if forced. A licensed plumber can do it and check the tank's condition at the same time.
