How old is my York furnace?
Open the front panel of your York furnace and find the serial on the rating plate. If the second character is a digit, the furnace was built October 2004 or later and you can read the year straight off characters two and four. If the first four characters are letters, it is older, and the third letter is the year. The model number on the same plate gives you the input size and, on many models, the efficiency.
Where to find the label on a York furnace
York's 2001 furnace recall notice placed the brand, model and serial inside the furnace's removable front panel, and current York furnaces still keep the plate behind the blower access door. Turn the furnace off at the service switch before lifting a panel. The plate is often on the cabinet side wall, so you may need to shine a light in at an angle. If your York is a horizontal unit in an attic, it may be easier to photograph the plate with your phone than to lean in. Don't open the upper burner area to look for the label.
How to read the code
Newer York furnaces: plant letter, a decade digit (0, 1 or 2), a month letter, the year digit, six more digits. Older York furnaces: plant, month letter, year letter, product letter, six digits. Month letters skip I and J. On model numbers, the input often appears as three digits. In the 2001 recall list, models like G8T08016UHB11 and P4HUB16N08001 both show 080, the 80,000 BTU/h input. Current models use names like TM9E, which York lists as a 95 percent AFUE single-stage furnace.
| Layout | What it means | Years used |

| P 1 M Y …… | Plant, decade 1 (2010s), month letter, year digit | 2010–2019 |
| P 2 M Y …… | Plant, decade 2 (2020s), month letter, year digit | 2020–2026 |
| P M Y P …… | Plant, month letter, year letter (before October 2004) | 1971–2004 |

What age means for a York furnace
DOE's furnace analysis averages about 21.4 years for gas furnaces, with other charts ranging from 15 to 25. York's own history shows why the heat exchanger is the part to worry about: the 2001 recall covered about 7,000 York, Luxaire and Coleman furnaces built between May 1 and July 16, 2001, because heat exchanger tubes could come loose and leak flue gas, including carbon monoxide. That was a factory defect. In an older furnace, though, the same part can crack from years of heating and cooling, and only a licensed HVAC technician should judge it. Other common age-related failures are igniters, inducer motors, blower motors and control boards. Before paying for a big repair, find the build date and compare it with those lifespans. Check your warranty: York's current furnaces list a lifetime heat exchanger warranty and 10-year parts coverage if registered online within 90 days, otherwise 5-year parts. A heat exchanger on a registered unit may be covered even if labor is not. Then compare the quote with the replacement range above.
How sure is this?
Widely documented. York doesn't publish this code; it comes from recall notices, service literature and inspector references. We tested the jci york rules against 35 serials, 8 of them with a date known from a recall notice, a printed label date or the maker. None decoded to a wrong year; codes whose year mark repeats show every possible reading. Always confirm with York's warranty page before you spend money on the answer.
Quick notes
- If your old-format serial starts WFKM or WGKM, it may be in the 2001 recall range; contact York to confirm the repair was done.
- Have a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of the house, especially with an older gas furnace.
- Ask a technician to show you any heat exchanger crack on camera or in a photo.
- Note the model's input size; replacement quotes should match it unless a load calculation says otherwise.
Common questions
Where is the serial on a York furnace?
On the rating plate inside the furnace, behind the removable front or blower access panel.
How long does a York furnace last?
York does not publish a lifespan. Expect something near DOE's gas furnace average of about 21.4 years, inside the 15 to 25 year range most charts use.
Was my York furnace part of a recall?
The 2001 recall covered 80 percent furnaces built May to mid-July 2001 with serials starting WFKM or WGKM. Check the CPSC notice for the model list.
Does York cover heat exchangers?
Current York furnaces list a lifetime heat exchanger warranty. Coverage on older or unregistered units may be shorter, so check your certificate or ask the dealer.
