Example: a real Trane serial with its date on record. Type yours on the plate to replace it.

17103N6MF4 was made week 10 of 2017 (around March)

It's about 9 years old. A gas furnace lasts about 21.4 years on average (DOE), so in human years it's 35.

Is this wrong? Tell us Human years use the US life expectancy of 79 (CDC, 2024).

A nine-character Trane serial starting with 7 is from 2007, and that length rule is where most misreadings start. Ten characters beginning with two digits means 2010 or later, year then week. Nine characters beginning with a single digit means 2002 to 2009. Nine characters beginning with a letter means 1983 to 2001, and the letter stands for the year.

Before decoding, look for a plain-text manufacture date on the tag. Trane labels usually print one, and it settles the question. A tag with serial 17103N6MF4 shows a printed date of 3/2017, which matches the decoded year 17, week 10. Inspector guides and CPSC recall wording agree on the rule, so it is Widely documented.

Where to find the label on a Trane furnace

On Trane gas furnaces, the CPSC describes a white model and serial label on the left or right side of the unit; on many models it is visible once the front door is off. Turn the thermostat to off and switch off the furnace at its service switch before you open the door, and use a flashlight rather than reaching in. Outdoor air conditioners and heat pumps carry the rating plate on the cabinet. Faded tags photograph better with the flash off and the light coming from the side.

How to read the code

2010 and later: ten characters. Digits 1 and 2 are the year (11 is 2011), digits 3 and 4 are the fiscal week, digit 5 is the day of the week, and the rest is a sequence. 11241KADBB is 2011, week 24, around mid-June. 2002 to 2009: nine characters. Digit 1 is the last digit of the year, digits 2 and 3 are the week. 81422S41G is 2008, week 14, early April. 1983 to 2001: nine characters starting with a year letter, then a two-digit week. The letters run W 1983, X 1984, Y 1985, S 1986, B 1987, C 1988, D 1989, E 1990, F 1991, G 1992, H 1993, J 1994, K 1995, L 1996, M 1997, N 1998, P 1999, R 2000, Z 2001. So J1828DWCD is 1994, week 18.

When the format changed

The two changeovers are the main source of mistakes. A 9-character serial beginning 7 could be misread as 2017 if you forget the length rule; it is 2007, as in the Trane furnace serial 7165RHA1G whose label says April 2007. Some guides start the 10-character format in 2009 rather than 2010, so a serial beginning 09 is possible. The weeks are fiscal weeks, as a 2005 CPSC notice explains, so week 01 can fall in late December and week 52 in early January. The letter era skips I, O and Q, and S and Z sit out of alphabetical order. Codes from 1980 to 1982 and older are not decoded here. When the printed date is missing, Trane's warranty and registration page can confirm details from the serial.

Who makes Trane

Trane and American Standard heating and cooling equipment come from the same company and share the same three serial eras. The 2017 CPSC furnace recall listed Trane, American Standard and Ameristar furnaces together, distributed by Trane U.S. Inc. of Tyler, Texas. Trane systems are sold through independent dealers nationwide.

How sure is this?

Widely documented. Trane doesn't publish this code; it comes from recall notices, service literature and inspector references. We tested the trane rules against 17 serials, 7 of them with a date known from a recall notice, a printed label date or the maker. None decoded to a wrong year; codes whose year mark repeats show every possible reading. Always confirm with Trane's serial lookup before you spend money on the answer.

Quick notes

  • Count the characters first. Nine versus ten tells you the era before anything else.
  • Check for a printed manufacture date on the tag; Trane labels usually include one.
  • Near the start or end of a year, allow for the fiscal week landing in the neighboring calendar year.
  • A Trane furnace serial beginning 16304 through 16324 falls in the 2017 CPSC recall range; check the notice if yours does.
  • If you have both a Trane and an American Standard component, decode them the same way.

Common questions

My Trane serial starts with a 7 and has nine characters. Is it from 2017?

No, 2007. Nine-character serials starting with a digit belong to 2002 through 2009. A 2017 unit would have ten characters starting with 17.

What does the letter at the start of an old Trane serial mean?

It is the year code for 1983 to 2001. For example, L is 1996, P is 1999 and Z is 2001. The two digits after it are the week.

What is the fifth digit in a newer Trane serial?

It is the day of the week the unit was built. It is not needed to work out age.

The decoded date and the printed date disagree. Which is right?

Go with the printed date on the tag. A mismatch usually means a misread character or a fiscal week near the turn of the year.
