How old is my Payne furnace or air conditioner?
A Payne serial beginning 3899 was built in week 38 of 1999, and one beginning 0519 in week 5 of 2019. The first four digits are the date, week first.
Most brands lead with the year, so this order catches people. Payne does it Carrier's way because Payne is a Carrier brand. Payne's site now says the brand has become WeatherMaker by Carrier, so a newer replacement may wear that name instead.
Where to find the label on a Payne furnace
Payne outdoor units have the rating plate on the side of the cabinet, usually on the panel nearest the electrical connection. On Payne furnaces and fan coils it is inside the front door. Turn a furnace off at its switch before you open it, and look without touching anything inside. The plate lists model, serial, voltage and refrigerant; take a clear photo of the whole thing so you have all of it for a dealer or the tool.
How to read the code
Ten characters: two digits for the week, two digits for the year, one letter for the plant, and a five-digit sequence. Weeks run 01 to 52 or 53. Years 85 through 99 are the 1900s and 00 forward are the 2000s. Carrier's service manuals list the plant letters, for example E for Collierville, Tennessee and X for Monterrey, Mexico. A Carrier manual's own sample, 0196E00001, reads as week 1 of 1996 from the Collierville plant.
| Layout | What it means | Years used |
|---|---|---|
| WW YY P ##### | Week, then year, then plant letter | 1985–2026 |

When the format changed
This week-then-year layout goes back to at least the mid-1980s. Third-party guides disagree on exactly when it started, and the earliest real example checked here is from 1986. Payne units older than that used other serial styles that the tool does not attempt. Watch for one easy mix-up: if a serial starts with a letter followed by digits, it is not a Payne-format serial, and it may be an ICP brand such as Heil or Tempstar, which put the year first. If the first two digits are higher than 53, it cannot be a week, so recheck the plate.
Who makes Payne
Payne is one of Carrier's residential brands, sharing engineering and serial formats with Carrier and Bryant. Payne's website now states that Payne is WeatherMaker by Carrier and points shoppers toward WeatherMaker for replacements, while keeping manuals and warranty documents available for existing owners. Payne equipment was sold and serviced through local dealers.
How sure is this?
Widely documented. Payne doesn't publish this code; it comes from recall notices, service literature and inspector references. We tested the carrier rules against 17 serials, 7 of them with a date known from a recall notice, a printed label date or the maker. None decoded to a wrong year; codes whose year mark repeats show every possible reading. Always confirm with Payne's warranty page before you spend money on the answer.
Quick notes
- Most Payne products carried a 10-year parts limited warranty upon registration; ask the previous owner or installer whether it was registered.
- Payne's site still hosts manuals and warranty documents for existing units, even with the rebrand.
- A WeatherMaker quote is a Carrier-family product. Compare its model and efficiency rating with the old Payne's plate.
- When the first two digits are 01 or 52, the build date sits at a year boundary; the year digits still decide the year.
Common questions
Which part of a Payne serial is the year?
The third and fourth digits. The first two are the week.
Is Payne still made?
Payne's site says the brand is now WeatherMaker by Carrier. Existing Payne owners can still get documents and support through dealers.
Is a Payne the same as a Carrier?
It is built by Carrier and uses the same serial layout. Feature sets and price tiers differ by model.
How do I get Payne warranty information?
Start with Payne's registration and warranty page and your warranty certificate, then the installing dealer. The site does not list a public serial lookup.
