7414C14X1771143 was made October 2014

It's about 12 years old. A tankless water heater lasts about 20 years on average (DOE), so in human years it's 47.

Is this wrong? Tell us Human years use the US life expectancy of 79 (CDC, 2024).

Navien serials go all the way down to the day of manufacture. Skip the four-digit model code and the letter after it, then read two digits for the year, one character for the month and two digits for the day. In 7414C14X1771143, that's 14 (2014), X (October) and 17 (the 17th). Months 1 to 9 are digits; X, Y and Z stand for October, November and December.

Navien spelled out the year-month-day rule in a 2018 recall notice issued with the CPSC. It has never published a general guide to its serials, and the older formats come from inspector write-ups, so the site labels Navien Widely documented.

Where to find the label on a Navien tankless water heater

Navien places the rating label on the side of the unit, and the serial is also printed on the shipping box if you kept it. Wall-hung units are often mounted high, so use a step stool and a flashlight, or photograph the label with your phone. Do not open the front cover to look for it. Behind that cover are the gas valve, burner and control board, which only a licensed technician should handle.

How to read the code

A newer Navien serial runs about 15 characters: a four-digit model code, one letter, then the date, then a short sequence. After the letter, read two digits as the year, the next character as the month (1 to 9, or X, Y, Z for October to December) and the following two digits as the day. The CPSC notice gives 18709 as July 9, 2018. Older units used dashed groups instead. In 9262-20081208-1027, the middle block is a full date, here December 8, 2008. In the four-group style, such as 9010-2008-114-1014, only the second group, the year, is documented; the decoder does not guess a month from the third group.

When the format changed

Navien changed from the dashed full-year layout to the compact year-month-day layout around 2010 or 2011; the exact cutover is not published, and the earliest compact serial on record here is from 2011. A CPSC recall for 2008 units noted that the side label listed the manufacturing year in four-digit form, which matches the older layout. Because every Navien format carries the year directly, there is no letter cycle to resolve. The main mistake people make is reading the model code at the front as a date. Skip the first four digits and the letter, and start there.

Who makes Navien

Navien is the North American brand of KD Navien (Kyungdong Navien), a heating and hot water manufacturer based in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. Navien has an innovation center and training academy in Irvine, California. Its serial code is shared only within Navien's own product lines, which include condensing tankless water heaters and combi boilers; the 2018 recall used the same date rule for both the NPE tankless and NCB combi models.

How sure is this?

Widely documented. Navien doesn't publish this code; it comes from recall notices, service literature and inspector references. We tested the navien rules against 11 serials, 6 of them with a date known from a recall notice, a printed label date or the maker. None decoded to a wrong year; codes whose year mark repeats show every possible reading. Always confirm with Navien's warranty page before you spend money on the answer.

Quick notes

  • Skip the four-digit model code and the first letter; the date starts right after.
  • X, Y and Z in the month position are October, November and December.
  • On a dashed four-group serial, read the year from the second group and stop. The month isn't documented for that style.
  • Flushing scale out of the heat exchanger on schedule matters more to a tankless unit's life than its age alone. That flush is usually done by the installer or a plumber.

Common questions

How do I find the date in a Navien serial like 9545J1152752044?

Skip 9545 (model code) and J. Then 11 is the year (2011), 5 is the month (May) and 27 is the day. That unit was made May 27, 2011.

What if my Navien serial has dashes and an 8-digit number in the middle?

That is the older layout. The 8-digit block is a full date written year, month, day, as in 20081208 for December 8, 2008.

Do Navien boilers use the same code as Navien water heaters?

Yes. The 2018 recall notice gave the same year-month-day rule for NPE tankless water heaters and NCB combi boilers.

Why isn't Navien marked as Official format?

Navien explained the date code in a recall notice, but it has not published a decoder for its serials in general, and the older layouts are described only by inspectors.
