How much does an AC capacitor replacement cost?
A run capacitor is a cheap part, so most of this bill is the visit. The range above covers one service call where a licensed HVAC technician swaps a failed run capacitor on a central air conditioner or heat pump, priced for your area. It adds the online list price of a common dual-run capacitor (a 45/5 microfarad round unit, from retailer listings) to an hour and a half of billed technician time. About half an hour is hands-on. The other hour is the trip and diagnosis. That time is billed at a multiple of the local HVAC technician wage reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which covers the shop's overhead, vehicle, insurance and profit.
AC capacitor replacement: typical bill
Part $12 (online list price, middle of 7 listings) plus about 0.5 hours of hands-on time and a trip and diagnosis hour, billed at roughly $70 an hour (a HVAC technician earning the national median of $29 an hour, times the 2.4 billing multiplier we use). Method.
The capacitor stores electrical energy and gives the compressor and outdoor fan motor a starting push, then helps keep them running smoothly. Lennox notes that capacitors fail more often than most AC parts because of the constant demand, especially in hot climates. When your bill is many times the range shown, ask what else was done.
What moves the price
The trip and diagnostic fee
On a small repair, getting a technician to your door costs more than anything in the truck. The model counts one hour for travel and diagnosis on top of the hands-on time. Some companies charge a flat service-call fee and price the repair separately. Others quote one number for everything. Either way, that first hour is where the money goes.
Capacitor size and type
Capacitors are rated in microfarads and voltage, and the new one has to match what the equipment calls for. A dual-run capacitor serves both the compressor and fan from one can. Some systems use two separate capacitors instead. Some technicians also add a hard-start kit for a compressor that struggles. Each of those changes the part cost.
Parts markup
The estimate uses the online list price of the part. Many service companies charge more than list for parts carried on the truck, which is common and not by itself a red flag. A fair invoice still names the part and its rating so you can see what you paid for.
Local wages and time of day
Labor is billed from the local HVAC wage, using the 25th percentile for the low end, the median for the typical figure and the 75th percentile with a higher markup for the high end. Night, weekend and holiday calls in peak summer often carry a surcharge above the high end.
Repair or replace?
On almost any working air conditioner, even an old one, a new capacitor is money well spent. The part is cheap, and it often brings a humming, stalled outdoor unit straight back to life. The exception is a capacitor that died because of something bigger. A compressor drawing too much current, a seized fan motor, or a second capacitor failure in one season all point deeper. Should the technician find the compressor failing on a system near DOE's average age for your climate (about 18 years in hot, humid areas and about 24 in the North), use that finding to plan a replacement instead of paying for repeat visits.
Run the numbers for your unit.
What a complete quote lists
- The diagnosis: what was measured and what failed
- Capacitor part number, microfarad rating and voltage
- Labor time or a flat repair price
- Trip, service-call or diagnostic fee, shown separately or stated as included
- Any additional parts, such as a hard-start kit, with the reason
- After-hours or emergency surcharge, if any
- Confirmation that the system was tested running after the repair
- Warranty on the part and on the labor, with the length of each

Common questions
What are the signs of a bad AC capacitor?
Lennox lists clicking or humming, trouble starting, warm air from the vents and a rise in energy bills. A common pattern is an outdoor unit that hums but the fan does not spin. A burning smell or smoke means turn the system off at the thermostat and call for service right away.
Is a capacitor a safe DIY repair?
No. This is a job for a licensed HVAC technician. A capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even with the power off, and the work involves high-voltage wiring inside the outdoor unit. Lennox also advises against doing it yourself.
Why is the bill so much more than the part?
The part is the small piece. Most of the cost is getting a trained technician to your house, finding the problem and standing behind the repair. The estimate above shows what that visit runs where you live.
How long do capacitors last?
Lennox estimates a typical capacitor lasts about 20 years, but heat, power surges and heavy use shorten that. Many fail well before the rest of the system does.
Is a hard-start kit a scam?
Not necessarily. It can help an older compressor start under load. The technician should explain it and let you decide, and the invoice should list it on its own line.
